About Maurice

Maurice Anthony Campbell, II was an extraordinary individual who left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. Born on July 28, 2003, in Bronxville, New York, Maurice’s journey took him from The Milestone School to Iona Grammar School, and finally to The Horace Mann School, where he excelled academically and athletically. His love for sports was evident from a young age, participating in figure skating, soccer, gymnastics, basketball, lacrosse, cross-country, swimming, and most passionately, hockey.

Maurice was a defenseman for the 15U New Jersey Avalanche, a nationally ranked hockey team, when he was diagnosed with cancer on his 15th birthday. Despite his diagnosis, Maurice maintained an inspiring balance between his health, sports, and academics. He completed his assignments, studied for his SATs, got accepted into the University of Pennsylvania as part of the Class of 2025, and continued to support his hockey team from the bench.

In his article “Why I Play Sports,” Maurice shared how his hockey team and coach were a crucial support system during his fight against cancer. Their solidarity and encouragement exemplified the strong bonds Maurice forged with those around him. His teammates’ gesture of creating special cancer awareness jerseys with “Mo 76 strong” symbolized their unwavering support and Maurice’s indomitable spirit.

Maurice was also a lover of food, fashion, laughter, Billie Eilish, his family, friends, traveling, and making TikTok videos. His infectious personality and kind heart touched many lives, leaving a legacy of joy, strength, and perseverance. Maurice’s story continues to inspire us every day and drives our mission to support pediatric cancer research and educational scholarships.

Maurice is survived by his parents, Maurice and Janet, and his older sister, Grace. He is also remembered by a wonderful group of family members, lifelong friends, teammates, coaches, classmates, and teachers. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations to Cycle for Survival – Memorial Sloan Kettering in Maurice’s memory.
